Fatigue Risk Management and Shiftwork

Excessive workplace fatigue is a risk to safe operations. Simply placing limits on the hours of service (HOS) is inadequate in addressing the risk of fatigue. Within the last decade, a broad consensus has emerged that the best way to manage fatigue risk is through a comprehensive fatigue risk management system (FRMS) that is integrated with other safety management systems as necessary. Many industries that incorporate 24/7 operations are implementing an FRMS approach.The FRMS should be based on sound science, recognize operational issues, include all stakeholders, and include a process to review and enhance the FRMS, as needed, with a goal of continuous improvement.
